Legality of Salvia

Salvia Divinorum is the legal drug that has enjoyed rocketing popularity with young people. Salvia is widely available on the Internet and this, combined with its perceived relative safety and short-lasting effects, have boosted its use. This peak may only be short lived, however, as a bill has been passed by California’s state Assembly (and is now in the state Senate) which will see the of Salvia to minors be made illegal. Illegalizing Salvia isn’t a simple black and white operation though, says Dr. Charles Grob of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center: “It is important to distinguish between salvia leaves chewed by natives and the chemically concentrated form that can increase the drugs potency by 10 or 15 times”. Assemblyman Anthony Adams whose bill is in the state Senate acknowledges that making the drug’s sale illegal might not be the most efficient and even-handed approach to Salvia’s control, but the risks it poses, he says, are simply too great.
