Phuket is slowly becoming one of the top destinations for Western vacationers to visit. When you consider what it has to offer this is hardly surprising.
The Phuket nightlife – nothing to write home about a few years ago – has improved drastically recently, with more and more places moving away from the tried, tested and tired formula of commercial pop music and cheap booze. This combination is all well and good but it offers little for the serious clubber.
Still predominant in Phuket nightlife is the Thai-style club. These semi-authentic places are full to the brim with locals crowded round small tables and sharing a bottle of whiskey, vodka or Jack Daniels. The music is usually live, with bands of varying qualities playing covers of popular Western and local favorites.
Recently though new styles of music are slowing being introduced by a number of places new to the Phuket nightlife that are really starting to push the boat out. These are nightspots that are run by people who put music before mass tourism. Important international DJs are starting to visit the island as a result.
Progressive thinking like this can only be good for Phuket nightlife and, by association, for Phuket’s tourism as a whole.
